And THEN...

As if yesterday's post wasn't full of enough mayhem for the week...

yesterday afternoon as the Hubby and I sat enjoying hors d'oeuvres, relaxation and adult conversation...

the local ice cream parlor was being robbed at gunpoint! The owner's adult son confronted the robber who then fired a shot at him and took off out the door with the cash. The owner's son (who wasn't hit by the bullet, obviously) then did what any sane and rational human would do when involved in a hold-up. He CHASED the robber out onto the highway and down the street FIRING SHOTS at him the whole way.

I don't care who you are, and I don't care what just happened. I DON'T think anyone has the right to run down the road shooting at someone at 6:30 in the evening. Little children play in their yards across the highway from that ice cream parlor. Elderly folks sit on their porches and watch the traffic go by. ANYONE could have been hit by a deranged citizen taking matters into his own hands. If you want to shoot the bad guy, shoot him in your own store!

That said, the owner's son did manage to catch the robber and hold him until police showed up, so I guess "good job." The bad guy's in jail. Still, no thanks for deciding for yourself that the entire community wouldn't mind being in the middle of your little gun battle.

In case you were wondering from the last couple of posts...no...we typically do NOT live in a crime-ridden area. We NORMALLY live in a perfectly peaceful little town beside a larger perfectly peaceful town that is situated across a river from a really nasty section of a larger city. (Got all that?) Maybe they're sending they're criminals across the river to our side of town lately. Or maybe the heat is drawing them out? Because up until this summer I never would have thought twice about sitting in the ice cream parlor with my kids and feeling pefectly SAFE! Now I think we'll just be getting our cones to go!

This is exactly how we are feeling lately. In the last six months, there have been two murders (though one was erroneously labeled manslaughter), one rape and three armed robberies. Our town was listed last year on Fortune magazines 100 best places to live in the USA! I empathize... completely.

The heat does some crazy things to people. It's always been this way. There are more crimes committed in the summer (the hottest season) because of it's ability to make people irritable and just crazy. Kinda like a full moon, but actually having been proven. :)
